Crossing the Moldovan river Dniester, you enter Transnistria, a narrow strip of land wedged between Moldova and Ukraine. Over the past two centuries, Transnistria has changed rulers six times. Ottomans, Germans, Romanians, Russians, and Moldovans have all left deep traces there.

When Romanian-speaking Moldova became independent in 1991, Russian-speaking Transnistria declared independence out of fear of language discrimination. A bloody civil war ended with a ceasefire, leaving the conflict frozen. With the war in neighbouring Ukraine, the geopolitical cards are now being reshuffled. Will the fragile Transnistria choose to face east or west?

Paul van der Stap has made several trips to Transnistria since 2018. This Bittersweet Life tells his story through images and text, reflecting his experiences in the country.
